Director of Archaeological Research

Jack Steinbring was born in Ripon, Wisconsin.  He received his B.A. degree at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, his M.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.  He founded the Department of Anthropology at the University of Winnipeg, Canada, and taught there for 31 years.  He retired in 1994, and returned to Ripon.  He is an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and an Adjunct Scholar in Anthropology at Ripon College.  He is equally specialized in Archaeology and Ethnology, and has published extensively in both fields.  In addition to six books, he has published numerous chapters in books and over 200 papers dealing with his researches.  He is a past president of the Rock Art Association of Canada, The Rock Art Association of Manitoba, and the International Federation of Rock Art Organizations.  He has been a vice president of many organizations including the Australian Rock Art Research Association, and is presently the Vice President of the Princeton Historical Society.  He is a past chairman of the City of Ripon Historical Preservation Commission. 

            In 2005, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award of The Eastern States Rock Art Research Association.

            Dr. Steinbring and his wife, Sandra, have conducted research in Australia, Hawaii, seven Canadian provinces, ten American states, Bolivia, Scotland, England, and Portugal.  His writings have been published in 13 countries, and in three languages.  He is listed in the Who’s Who In Canada, Marquis Who’s Who In The United States, and in Who’s Who In World Rock Art Research.  Current investigations feature the archaeology of prehistoric boulder arrangements in North America, and the initial expressions of rock art in the western hemisphere.
